4/18 - Boys swim - CIF Academic award recognition @ Angels game 4/26

Boys Swim Team Members,

As you know, the ACHS Boys swim team was the recipient of the CIF Academic award for 2015-2016 season. We are to be honored at the Angels game next Tuesday 4/26 at a pregame ceremony at 6:30pm (game starts at 7pm). If you would like to go, the cost of the game ticket and bus is $20. Seating on the bus is extremely limited. Priority is given to Varsity boys, Sr's, Jr, etc.

If you want to go, you will need to pay $20 to the ASB Bookkeeper ASAP (by Wednesday?). This covers game entry and bus. Any food is the responsibility of the individual.

We would need to leave ACHS by 2:15-ish to be there in time for the 6:30 presentation. We will leave the game by 9ish and arrive back at ACHS at 10:30-11pm.

Note that we have our last home swim meet against Royal the following day.

Coach Tim

2/27 - Congrats to the 2016 ACHS Boys Varsity Team Captains - Dylan Specht, Tim Lee, and Harrison Mello!

Welcome Coach Hedrick

Coach Tim Hedrick joins the Scorpion Aquatics staff this year as Boys Varsity Coach. He’s no stranger to swimming or coaching success (click to see). Along with a proven record of achievement in these areas, Coach Hedrick brings a high degree of expectation that all swimmers work their hardest to do their best.

Following the success of 2015, the Scorpion’s first ever league championship title under Boys Varsity coach Colin Hedrick, the 2016 team has its work cut out for it to have another outstanding year. It all boils down to integrity, effort, and commitment - key ingredients for success in the pool, and more importantly, out of the pool. Who wants it?

Catch the wave…

Dry Land Dilemma

Two of our major competitors have the advantage of a pool on their campus- while we toil on a grass field (with pushups, windsprints, yoga, running stairs) Rio Mesa and Oxnard High Schools have their boys and girls in the water.

To this end, all of the boys need to work on the following:

*Increase your cardiovascular capacity: this means swimming, running, cycling to where you raise your heart rate to at least 70% of your maximum. For most of you, this will mean keeping your heart rate over 150 beats per minute for 30-45 minutes each day. The longer you can sustain this, the better.
* Stretch for ten to fifteen minutes each day: stretch lightly before exercising, and make sure to stretch afterward using all of the poses we have tried at practice

* Eat. Eat wisely: complex carbohydrates (brown rice; whole grain pastas and breads;leafy green vegatables); lean meats; and water. Lots of water. Eat at regular times per day and stick to a schedule. Your body will learn to accept and look forward to the intake. You want to avoid foods that come in boxes. A professional endurance athlete who competes in 24 hour solo bike rides, put it this way: "If I cannot harvest it or kill it, I don't eat it."

Rest: The greatest advance in sports physiology has come with the value of rest as recovery. This means, that you will perform at a higher level if you can fill your work-out schedule with adequate sleep and time spent without vigorous activity. Staying up late, frenetic activity, operating daily on a lack of sleep...all of these affect your performance.
